Taylor Swift joined Elon Musk among the world's wealthiest people, according to a new rich list.
In a remarkable turn of events, the number of billionaires surged by 141 from the previous year, reaching a staggering 26 more than the record set in 2021. According to Forbes, these financial titans are not only wealthier than ever but collectively boast a mind-boggling fortune of US$14.2 trillion (NZ$23.8 trillion).
Among the notable newcomers to this exclusive club is singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, whose meteoric rise to megastardom has captivated audiences worldwide. Swift's dominance was on full display at this year's Grammy Awards, where she made history by becoming the first artist to claim the coveted album of the year award four times. Her album "1989 (Taylor's Version)" further solidified her reign as the reigning queen of music, emerging as the best-selling vinyl LP of the past year.
But Swift's influence extends far beyond the realm of music. Even her presence at American football games to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, has been credited with boosting NFL viewership figures—a testament to her cultural impact and widespread appeal.
Meanwhile, the landscape of wealth is largely dominated by figures from the United States, with eight of the top 10 richest individuals hailing from the nation. Among them is Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and X (formerly Twitter), whose estimated net worth of US$195 billion (NZ$327 billion) secures him the second spot on the list.
As Frenchman Bernard Arnault and his family lead the charge, the ascent of Musk and other tech moguls underscores the profound influence of the technology industry in shaping the modern economy. Yet, amidst the glitz and glamour of immense wealth, questions persist about the equitable distribution of resources and the societal implications of such staggering fortunes. He is followed in third by Amazon owner Jeff Bezos.
